NSCA-CPT Provides Specialized Knowledge Needed to Train Pregnant Clients

Lincoln, Nebraska - October 6, 2005. Recent research in the medical community has proven that exercising during pregnancy has many benefits for the woman and the fetus, and pregnant women may turn to personal trainers to address several issues they face during pregnancy. A report published in the September issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends pregnant women follow an exercise program to lessen the incidence of obesity and other pregnancy-induced complications. This recommendation should be continued after pregnancy and before attempting another pregnancy.

Pregnancy can cause some women to feel self-conscious about their changing bodies, become concerned about their baby's health, want to stay in shape throughout the pregnancy and want to be able to handle the rigors and stress of labor and delivery. This creates a need for personal trainers who have the ability to develop programs that are consistent with a pregnant woman's physical capabilities and involve the level of support, motivation and professional guidance necessary to meet or exceed goals and objectives established by her obstetrician.

The NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer® (NSCA-CPT®) credential demonstrates a personal trainer has the specialized knowledge, skills and abilities needed to properly design a low-risk fitness program for pregnant women. The prenatal exercise program needs to take into account the safety of both the mother and fetus. An NSCA-CPT certified personal trainer will have an advanced understanding of the changes that may occur to the musculoskeletal, endocrine, cardiorespiratory and metabolic systems of a pregnant woman. An NSCA-CPT can make the necessary adjustments to the fitness program to accommodate for mechanical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and be aware of training guidelines such as those recommended by ACOG.

Earning the NSCA-CPT certification demonstrates that a personal trainer has the ability to obtain the information needed from a pregnant client to design a safe and effective fitness program. The NSCA-CPT will understand that the information collected in the initial assessment will be used to ensure that the fitness program designed will closely match the client's fitness level and ability.

NSCA-CPT certified personal trainers realize the need to pay special attention to the conditions that present contraindications to exercise as established by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics and be confident enough to recognize these contraindications and discontinue exercise, if necessary. An NSCA-CPT will make the appropriate adjustments to make exercise enjoyable and comfortable for the client to ensure the client continues with the program and benefits from the entire experience.
