NSCA Certification Commission Offering Discount to APTA Members

Lincoln, Nebraska - April 10, 2006. The NSCA Certification Commission is offering APTA members a discount off the registration fee when taking the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) exam at APTA conferences. In 2006, the CSCS exam will be scheduled June 20 in conjunction with the PT Annual Conference and Exposition in Orlando, Florida, and October 30 in conjunction with the APTA National Student Conclave in Dallas, Texas. Earning the CSCS provides physical therapists with an opportunity to enhance their career by demonstrating that he or she has a solid scientific foundation in the exercise sciences and nutrition factors that affect health and sports performance at any level. These professional benefits have led many physical therapy programs to recommend the CSCS to their students and staff.

"NYU's Physical Therapy Department has recognized the importance of making its physical therapy graduates highly competitive in the practice arena by becoming Certified Strength Conditioning Specialists. Holding this credential says a lot about their level of strength training and conditioning knowledge," said Marilyn Moffat, full professor of physical therapy at New York University and past APTA president.

Physical therapists who work with an athletic population can use the sport specific knowledge represented by the CSCS certification to exhibit leadership in their field. A physical therapist can use the understanding of proper technique and applications of strength, plyometric and aerobic exercise that the CSCS covers to develop a reconditioning program to more quickly return injured athletes to competition. A physical therapist's knowledge of the correct flexibility, conditioning and plyometric and resistance training exercise techniques is confirmed with the CSCS credential. These skills can be employed by a CSCS certified physical therapist for injury management and rehabilitation.

APTA members interested in learning more about the NSCA Certification Commission's exams or the discount can call toll-free 888-746-2378, e-mail commission@nsca-cc.org or visit www.nsca-cc.org.
