The China Olympic Committee (COC) and NSCA Certification Commission will sign a formal agreement in November 2006 to work together to encourage strength and conditioning coaches in China to earn the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) certification. The COC recognizes the significance and importance of having properly certified individuals working with their athletes, and they will recommend that their strength and conditioning professionals earn the CSCS credential.
In preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the COC has made the commitment to provide athletes with highly qualified strength and conditioning professionals. Dr. Thomas Baechle, CSCS,*D; NSCA-CPT,*D, the Executive Director of the NSCA Certification Commission said, "The COC is looking to the Commission to help advance its ability to identify coaches that possess the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to maximize the strength training and conditioning levels of its Olympic athletes."
Dr. Bob Chen, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, is the NSCA Certification Commission's representative in China and serves as the Special Senior Advisor for the China Olympic Committee in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. "The Chinese Olympic Committee is interested in the structure of the CSCS certification and they want to establish an agreement to work with the NSCA Certification Commission in the future," Dr. Chen said.
The CSCS exam is recognized internationally as the most highly respected strength and conditioning certification in the world. CSCS professionals make a remarkable difference in the lives and training practices of athletes every day, as demonstrated by the fact that 95% of the NCAA Division I National Championship teams in 2005 had a CSCS certified individual on their school's performance training staff.
In October 2006, five members of the COC visited the United States to learn more about how CSCS certified individuals can have a positive impact on their athletes. Their visit included tours of both the University of Southern California and University of Nebraska-Lincoln strength and conditioning facilities.
