Knowledge of Nutrition Can Enhance a Personal Trainer's Effectiveness
Lincoln, Nebraska - December 18, 2006. The NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer® (NSCA-CPT®) credential validates that a personal trainer has the fundamental knowledge needed to address misinformation and to provide suggestions as it relates to general nutrition for health, physical performance, disease prevention and weight loss. A qualified personal trainer has the knowledge to be a credible source of nutrition information for clients.
A recent study found that individuals who want to lose substantial amounts of body fat and keep it off must exercise and make changes in their diets.1 Nutritional suggestions made by a personal trainer must match the needs and goals of each client. An NSCA-CPT certified individual has an advanced understanding of the value of healthy eating and sound dietary habits to help a client meet his or her exercise goals.
An NSCA-CPT certified individual also has the knowledge to know when to refer a client to a registered dietician. Referral is especially needed if a client has a disease state or medical condition that is affected by nutrition (diabetes, heart disease, elevated cholesterol, obesity) or if the complexity of the nutritional issue is beyond the expertise of the personal trainer.
The NSCA-CPT credential demonstrates that a personal trainer possesses the tools to discuss nutrition with his or her clients, use that information to make recommendations and, if needed, refer clients to a network of knowledgeable individuals if their nutritional needs fall outside of the scope of the personal trainer’s expertise.
