How to list the Credentials of Distinction
The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®) and NSCA-Certified Personal
Trainer® (NSCA-CPT®) credentials should always be presented using a standard format.
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
When the credential is written out, each word except the conjunction "and" should be capitalized.
CSCS
When the credential is abbreviated, use capital letters with no spaces or periods. When the
CSCS credential is used in a sentence after a certificate holder's name, a comma should follow
the credential mentioned.
Example: Jane Johnson, CSCS, spoke at the conference. The registered trademark symbol is not needed when the credentials are listed after a certificate holders name.
NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT)
When the credential is written out, each word should be capitalized. Note: There are no spaces before or after the hyphen separating NSCA and Certified.
NSCA-CPT
When the credential is abbreviated, use capital letters with no spaces or periods. Never split
the credential at the hyphen at the end of a line. Never refer to the credential as CPT, always
NSCA-CPT. Note: There are no spaces before or after the hyphen.
When the NSCA-CPT credential is used in a sentence after a certificate holder's name, a comma should follow the credential mentioned. Example: Jane Johnson, NSCA-CPT, spoke at the conference. The registered trademark symbol is not needed when the credentials are listed after a certificate holders name.
CSCS, NSCA-CPT
When a person holds both certifications, they should both appear after his/her name.
Example: Jane Johnson, CSCS, NSCA-CPT Note that a comma follows the person's name, then a space, the CSCS abbreviation followed immediately by a comma, a space and then the NSCA-CPT abbreviation. The CSCS is always listed first when a person holds both credentials.
Recertified with Distinction, *D
All words are capitalized except "with." When the credentials follow a person's name and the
person has been Recertified with Distinction, the abbreviated format should appear as the
examples below.
CSCS,*DNOTE: The comma immediately follows the credential, and there are no spaces between any of the characters. A semi-colon is used to separate the two credentials when an individual is Recertified with Distinction.
